ABOUT US

The Hall of Science Amateur Radio Club was founded in the 1970's and is a working exhibit at the New York Hall of Science, located in Flushing Meadow, Corona Park, in the boro of Queens, New York City. The museum is on the site of the 1939 and 1964 World's Fair and is located very close to the Arthur Ashe US Tennis Centre, home of the US Open, and Shea Stadium, home of the New York Mets baseball team.

The club's repeater, WB2ZZO, operates at 444.200 MHz+ with a PL tone (CTCSS) of 136.5 and is open to all licensed amateur radio operators.

Club Station Shack and Antennas

Our station is located on the lower level of the Central Pavillion at the Hall of Science and is usually staffed by volunteers on weekends and some weekday afternoons. Rebuilding efforts, following a lengthy renovation, are now mostly complete! As usual, the station serves as a welcome point for the museum's many visitors who may wish to get an understanding of the educational and personal benefits that amateur radio can offer to everyone. It is also now fully-operational on all HF bands, 6 metres all-mode and 2m/70cm FM. Satellite, packet and APRS on 2m/70cm are coming soon!

Our station offers full spectrum coverage using multiple transceivers and an array of antennae high atop the roof. Here's a sample of what members and visitors to the station can see and operate: 

  • Kenwood TS-850 HF transceiver for DXing, contests, digital modes, SSB and CW.
  • Yaesu FT-847 HF, VHF & UHF transceiver for weak-signal work above 30 MHz + satellite operation.
  • Kenwood TM-D700 Dual-band transceiver for FM/repeater operation, Packet and APRS.
  • Icom IC-2350H UHF and VHF Dual-band transceiver for FM and repeater operation
  • Bearcat BC-780 XLT scanner programmed for all of NYC's public safety, aviation and marine frequencies
  • Kenwood TL-922A 1000W linear amplifier for HF operations.
  • RigBlaster Pro for digital modes, voice keying and CW operation.
  • Two networked computers for logging and operating software. N1MM and DXBase logging provided.

Towering 125' above the ground, our station is equipped with numerous antennas customized for specific modes:
